OK... so I arrived back in America on Monday evening. It was, as usual, an emotional time for me. I love coming home. There is nothing quite like America. I know there is no such thing as perfection in our human condition... and we are definitely in a confused state in our nation right now... but this is home... and I am very happy to be home again.
Maybe everyone feels this way about their home country. I do, however, have some friends from Hungary who live nearby and are always talking about going back home. They miss their feeling of homeland security. They speak fondly of walking the streets in Hungary at night with no fear of mistreatment or danger of any kind. They said America is frightening and they lock themselves in their home each evening because they are afraid to go out.
Maybe they have a point... but I don't think so. Every country I have visited has its points of danger. Feelings of security come with familiarity to a degree and understanding how to be safe in that particular location comes with knowing the turf. The more visits I make to any country, the more secure I feel... not because it actually gets safer, but because I become more familiar with where the exit doors are located.
... and then, if you read the newspaper or watch the news on television regularly you might also wish to hide under the bed. Gloom! Doom! Death! Destruction! There really is no such thing as "fair and balanced". The truth is that most all of us go about our lives with very little difficulty. Yeah we have those bad times, those ugly confrontations, those natural or human disasters... but for the most part... most of us are doing all right.
Maybe our expectations for perfection are a little high... and our thankfulness for what we have, where we live and who we share this planet with is a little too low. Today... I am thankful.

Welcome back to the land of the free and the home of the brave! I think of you as being grateful every day. Gratitude flows over into creative expressions, and you are one of the more creative people I've met. Again, welcome back, and I hope all the new friends you made and the old ones you've connected with are all doing well.
Thanks for reminding us to be thankful too!
Welcome home! Indeed, thankfulness is a rich blessing. From it can grow connections to and care for each other and to the treasures we can be to one another. That is the essence of "home."
Welcome Home
A very down to earth emotional and sincere post about home. Everyone should think like that. God Bless you and America.
